No matter who becomes governor in January, Michigan’s next administration will face a major corrections problem. Prison advocates and corrections union leadership might generally have very different perspectives on what changes are needed within the state’s prisons.

The reelection campaign of Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett and the progressive insurgency of Democratic nominee Will Lawerence came to a head Tuesday during the first — and potentially last — debate featuring the candidates in this year’s contest for Michigan 7th Congressional District.

GRAND RAPIDS – The relationship between Michigan and the federal government — especially when it comes to the tariffs levied by the Trump administration — was central throughout the first general election debate of Michigan’s gubernatorial election between Democrat Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Republican U.S. Rep. John James (R-Shelby Township) on Tuesday night.
